The platform you build your online store on affects everything that follows: how fast you can launch, how easy the store is to run, what it costs every month, and how far it can grow. After building stores on all three platforms since 2008, here is how we help clients choose between Shopify, Magento and WooCommerce.

Shopify: the simplest way to start selling

Shopify is a hosted platform, so hosting, security and updates are handled for you. You pay a monthly plan plus transaction fees if you don't use Shopify Payments. In return you get a store you can run yourself from day one.

  • Best for: small and growing brands that want to launch quickly
  • Strengths: easy admin, reliable checkout, large app store
  • Watch out for: app costs adding up, and less control over checkout

Magento: power and control for larger catalogs

Magento (Adobe Commerce) gives you complete control over design, content and functionality. It handles large catalogs, multiple stores, complex pricing and custom features that other platforms struggle with.

  • Best for: established retailers with thousands of products or custom requirements
  • Strengths: flexibility, multi-store and multi-currency support, B2B features
  • Watch out for: higher development and hosting costs, and it needs experienced developers

WooCommerce: ecommerce inside WordPress

WooCommerce turns a WordPress website into an online store. If content, blogging and SEO drive your business, it keeps everything in one place.

  • Best for: content-led businesses and stores that already run on WordPress
  • Strengths: full ownership, huge plugin library, strong SEO
  • Watch out for: you manage hosting, updates and security yourself

How to decide

Start with three questions. How many products will you sell in two years? How much do you want to manage technically? Do you need features no standard store offers? For most new stores, Shopify is the right answer. Larger or more complex businesses usually grow into Magento, and content-first brands are often happiest on WooCommerce.
